The Deck

---Maui -  August 4, 1993


I went out on the deck
and absorbed the ocean
and the sky
Molokai across the channel
in front of me
mountains merging with clouds
behind me
And dense green foliage 
all around me
isolating this little spot from
all the chaos and confusion 
that come with me.

I absorbed it all while 
bright sun warmed and 
darkened my pale mainland skin.

And then I went inside
to fix the plumbing.
